Description: None higher pop1 This relic is 110 years old and is steeped in history; this 1914 Buffalo Bisons International League pocket schedule features the first professional game of Hall of Famer Babe Ruth's career. We must give this piece a bit of context and history, so bear with us as we explain this pocket schedule and its significance in baseball lore. The International League, a Triple-A league, for which the Baltimore Orioles had been relegated from the American League in 1902. Ruth, plucked from fields of Baltimore by Orioles owner Jack Dunn, was 19 years old at the time of his International League debut and a pitcher, to boot! Ruth, whom many know went on to become the greatest slugger in MLB history, faced off against the Buffalo Bisons in the second game of the season on April 22, 1914, on the mound against the Herd, marking the beginning of his first professional season. Ruth tossed a six-hit, 6-0 shutout for the Orioles over the Bisons, striking out 6 while going 2-4 at the plate. Ironically enough, the second batter Ruth faced was none other than Joe McCarthy, the man who would manage Ruth for 17 years while on the Yankees. This schedule is steeped in lore, as Dunn is the one created with giving Ruth the nickname of Babe. As the legend states, a writer heard Dunn remark after an inter-squad Spring Training game that "This Baby will never get away from me." Sadly, Dunn ran into financial trouble due to declining attendance, caused by the Federal League's Baltimore Terrapins being the draw in Charm City, forcing Dunn to sell off his best players. Ruth was sold to the Boston Red Sox on July 4, 1914, for a sum that is disputed to this day. Ruth reported to Boston on July 11, the beginning of his Hall of Fame career. Considering this schedule's age, it is in remarkable condition, with only light fading of the schedule and faint wear. Still, it is a historical piece of baseball, an addition to the pantheon of Americana, and marks Ruth's ascent to baseball greatness.
