The railroad was known in English as the Dutch East Indies Railway Company. Construction began in 1864, with the first service in 1867. Most early railroads were built with private capital but could not generate adequate returns, so the government undertook construction in some regions. The country continued with a mix of public and private rail lines until 1942, when the Japanese occupied the Dutch East Indies and operated all railroads as a single entity. After World War II, freedom fighters took over the railways, creating the first direct predecessor to today's PT Kereta Api, the Djawatan Kereta Api Repoeblik Indonesia. With Indonesia's full independence in 1949, the most separate systems were combined into the Djawatan Kereta Api. Non-state railway systems in Java retained their paper existence until 1958, when all railway lines in Indonesia were nationalized, thereby creating the Perusahaan Negara Kereta Api (PNKA) the State Railway Corporation). For auction are three very rare documents: (a) a bond certificate in the amount of 500 Guilders (Dutch currency) dated March 9, 1920; (b) a receipt for the purchase of the bond; and (c) 6 bond payment coupons. The receipt measures appx 8 x 4 1/2 inches and is printed on heavy-weight paperstock. It is in very good condition. There are no rips or tears, and all markings are from its issuance. It also has staple holes from documents previously attached. The bond coupon sheet measures app 10 x 4 3/4 inches. It is printed on heavy-duty paperstock, also. This item is in very good condition. There are no rips or tears, and all writing/markings are from its issuance and use. This is a fantastic lot for either the collector of foreign railroad stocks and bonds or for Indonesia history fans. You will not find a lot of these certificates around.
