Description: ca.1920Original Antique Rand McNally Map South American Border Disputes Involving Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, Columbia Rare map showing the disputed boundaries superimposed in green. Colombia and Peru have had several border disputes, including the Leticia War and the Salomón-Lozano treaty, which were both related to the Amazon River: The Salomón-Lozano treaty In 1922, Colombia and Peru signed a treaty to resolve border disputes, with Peru giving up sovereignty of Leticia to Colombia and retaining control of the lands up to the Putumayo River. The Leticia War In 1932, Peru seized control of Leticia, sparking an armed conflict between the two countries that lasted until 1933. The League of Nations mediated the conflict and awarded Leticia to Colombia. The war resulted in the Colombianization of the Leticia and Putumayo regions and the expulsion of Peruvians. The Rio Protocol Two years after the Leticia War, the Rio Protocol was signed, establishing a border agreed upon by both countries. The territorial dispute between Ecuador and Peru dated from before Ecuador's independence, as part of a broader dispute between what was then Gran Colombia and Peru. It revolved around whether Ecuador's territory extended beyond the Andes mountain range to the Marañon (Amazon) river, including the Amazonian basin. Paraguay's primary border dispute with Bolivia centers around the ownership of the Chaco Boreal region, a large, sparsely populated area in the Gran Chaco, which led to a violent conflict known as the "Chaco War" between the two countries from 1932 to 1935; Paraguay ultimately gained control of most of the disputed territory after the war concluded with a Paraguayan victory . approximate sizes map image: 5.5" x 3.4" card: 6.9" x 4.8" taken from Atlas of the World Publishers Rand McNally & Co.
