1921 NY Times newspaper NY Yankee BABE RUTH HOME RUN RECORD for a SINGLE SEASON

Description: 1921 NY Times newspaper - NY Yankee BABE RUTH is well on his way to the new HOME RUN RECORD for a SINGLE SEASON - inv # 8W-402 SEE PHOTO----- COMPLETE, ORIGINAL NEWSPAPER, the NY Times dated June 12, 1921. This newspaper contains prominent "stacked" headlines on the front page of the sports section along with a chart showing that BABE RUTH is 5 days ahead of his season high home run record from the 1920 season. Ruth would go on to set a new season high home run record of 59 in 1921 (which he would again break in 1927 with 60). George Herman Ruth Jr. (February 6, 1895 – August 16, 1948), better known as Babe Ruth, was an American professional baseball player whose career in Major League Baseball (MLB) spanned 22 seasons, from 1914 through 1935. Nicknamed "The Bambino" and "The Sultan of Swat", he began his MLB career as a stellar left-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, but achieved his greatest fame as a slugging outfielder for the New York Yankees. Ruth established many MLB batting (and some pitching) records, including career home runs (714), runs batted in (RBIs) (2,213), bases on balls (2,062), slugging percentage (.690), and on-base plus slugging (OPS) (1.164); the latter two still stand today. Ruth is regarded as one of the greatest sports heroes in American culture and is considered by many to be the greatest baseball player of all time. He was one of the first five inductees into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. Ruth hit home runs early and often in the 1921 season, during which he broke Roger Connor's mark for home runs in a career, 138. Each of the almost 600 home runs Ruth hit in his career after that extended his own record. After a slow start, the Yankees were soon locked in a tight pennant race with Cleveland, winners of the 1920 World Series. On September 15, Ruth hit his 55th home run, shattering his year-old single season record. In late September, the Yankees visited Cleveland and won three out of four games, giving them the upper hand in the race, and clinched their first pennant a few days later. Ruth finished the regular season with 59 home runs, batting .378 and with a slugging percentage of .846. Very good condition.
