The editor Henry Collins Brown (1862–1961) was a journalist and historian who founded the Museum of the City of New York. He arrived in New York from Scotland at the age of 13 and became a leading figure among experts in the history of the city. His yearly series of manuals presented authoritative articles. This 1921 volume includes descriptions of people — from Edgar Allan Poe to Commodor Stevens — and places that resonate across decades. This book is Illustrated with scores of drawings, engravings and photographs, including a color frontispiece, fold-out full color images and other early color photographs of New York City. Spine faded. Covers show edge wear and a dot of white on the front along with some soiling to the back. Hinges are strong, book is sturdy. Frontspiece has a Basil Stevens ex libris sticker (Basil is a relative of the Commodore) and the name of the person who presented the book in pencil along with some penciled notes of select page numbers. Interior pages are clean and unmarked. There is a tear in the fold-out color illustration, but all sections are intact (see photos). Overall this volume is in good or better condition.
