Description: FULLY IN GERMAN PUBLISHED IN BERLIN IN 1922. This 6-volume is the first 6 volumes, Vol 1 - 6, of a 40-Volume set that was published between 1922 and 1927. All of these first six volumes were First Editions published in 1922. The Spine title, repeated on an initial title page is, "Die Diplomatischen Akten des Auswärtigen Amtes 1871-1914", which translates to, "Diplomatic Files of the Temporary Office 1871-1914". The overall title of the 40-Vol set is found on the left of the paired title pages shown in a listing photo: "Die große Politik der europäischen Kabinette 1871 - 1914. Sammlung der Diplomatischen Akten des Auswärtigen Amtes", which translates to, "The Great Politics of the European Cabinets 1871 - 1914. Collection of Diplomatic Files by the Federal Foreign Office". Authored by Johannes Lepsius, Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy, and Friedrich Thimme. It was published by Deutsche Verlagsgesellschaft fur Politik und Geschichte M.B.H, or German Publishing House for Politics and History M.B.H The 6 individual volumes are titled, translated into English, with number of pages in parentheses: Vol 1: The Frankfurt Peace and its Aftermath 1871-1877 (328 p); Vol 2: The Berlin Congress and its Prehistory (344 p); Vol 3: The Bismarckian Alliance System (454 p); Vol 4: The Triple Alliance and England (419 p); Vol 5: New Developments in the East (350 p); Vol. 6: Danger of war in East and West. End of the Bismarck Period (419 p). The overall condition of this 6-Vol set is GOOD, although with specific issues to note for a few volumes. Dark blue cloth boards, with moderate to heavy corner and top/bottom spine wear, light edge wear otherwise. Rubbed but still clear gilt spine letters. A previous institution owner stamp on front and rear endpapers and some of the title pages. No interior marks, with darkened page tops, age-toned solidly bound pages. Plain white endpapers. Volume 1 endpapers were mostly cracked at the spine - the binding in front and back was strengthened with the use of bookbinding glue and white bookbinding tape - the front endpapers of Volume 1 are shown with this white tape repair. All endpapers are similarly bare, but not cracked. Volume 3 had moisture impacts with moisture stains on top and side page edges (seen in the listing photo showing the top view of the set). Small stain outlines into the pages of Volume 3 - this is shown in listing photo - no page curling due to this moisture impact. Finally, the back board of Volume 3 also had a moisture impact of bubbled cloth - this is shown in the last listing photo. These Volume 3 issues did not impact the tight binding and did not impact any of the text. A comprehensive journal article documents this German effort to recast history in light of the first World War. The title of the article is, "War Guilt Propaganda Conducted by the German Foreign Ministry During the 1920s", authored by Herman J. Wittgens and published in French in "Historical Papers" (English translation of French journal) vol 15, no. 1, 1980, p. 228-247. A simple paragraph synopsis of the 40-Vol effort found online: "The "Great Politics" appeared in the 1920s, documenting the prehistory of the First World War in 40 volumes and numerous sub-volumes since the founding of the German Empire. Although this edition arose from the idea of countering documentary material against the war guilt charge of the Versailles Treaty, the GP is still a suitable, thematically sorted entry into the files of the imperial era."
