Description: “Here is a whole wardrobe of pretty frocks and dresses for the children, so easy to make you will find the work a pleasure.” The Woman’s Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences in Scranton, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1916 by Mary Brooks Picken. The school combined correspondence courses with classroom instruction in dressmaking, millinery, cooking, fashion design, beauty, and homemaking. During the 1920s it become the world's largest women's long distance educational institution. The Institute closed in 1938. The courses provided a means for professional advancement, allowing women to study as their schedules allowed and at a lower cost than in-person instruction. The lessons were mailed to each student, who then had to pass a test before progressing. Some of the lessons required that the student submit a sample of sewn work. Students could submit questions about a lesson by mail and get a reply from one of the teachers. The publication covers a wide range of topics. See the pictures for a table of contents. The item is antique and made of paper, so discoloration and fading are present. The edges and corners are worn in some places. The binding is soft bound in printed paper wrap and is stapled together. Photos are part of the description and represent only a portion of the pages from the booklet, so please review for condition details. Additional pictures can be requested. The publication has 62 pages and one page of exam questions. Other coursework booklets are available in our store. Message us with questions prior to purchasing.
