Description: While a few articles talk about Asia, the bulk is on Canadian native Americans. Two Boys Go to School, on 2 Inuit boys from Herschel Island who went to Carcross School. When Bishop Stringer first went to Herschel he called the Inuit there "one of the most uncivilized and pagan tribes of the North." There is a story about the Inuit village called "Shiny Wall" in the article after the heathen had been shown the true way. There are over 4 pages of photos of native American children, where they came from & the churches that had adopted them. There is a general article on the Indian Boarding Schools & 1 specifically on Chapleau. The back inside cover locates the schools. I rather suspect today the church wishes it had never contracted to administer these residential schools whose purpose was to "kill the Indian in the child". In the process of trying to assimilate them into European culture & language there was much emotional, sexual & physical abuse. This magazine from 1924 puts the best face on this "civilizing" movement as a force for good.
