1925 BEKINS VAN LINES Motor Roads Map CALIFORNIA Ridge Route + Coast and Inland

Description: Vintage fold-out 1925 road map of California, published more than 98 years ago by the Bekins Van Lines. The map opens to 20¼" x 18" and uses heavy black lines to show the routes traveled by Bekins. Skirting along the state's western edge is the Coast Route, passing through Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Salinas, and San Jose, between Los Angeles and San Francisco. To the east is the Inland Route, through California's Central Valley by way of Oakland, Stockton, Modesto, Fresno, and Bakersfield, south of which was the portion known as the Ridge Route, which wound along the ridge tops of the San Gabriel and Tehachapi Mountains to Castaic. The Ridge Route highway labeled on this map was built in 1915 and is the first to have that name. In 1933 the 3-lane Ridge Alternate Highway, later signed as U.S. Route 99, opened to traffic. It was widened to a 4-lane divided expressway from 1949-1951, and 20 years later it was severed with the construction of Pyramid Dam. Today's 8-lane I-5 freeway is now the major north-south route. On the reverse side there's a mileage table, with distances to hundreds of locations in the state from Los Angeles, Fresno, San Francisco, Sacramento, and San Diego. There are also photographs of six Bekins depositories and text on Bekins moving, storage, and moth destroyer services. Condition: The map is in very good, condition, bright and clean, with no rips or tears. A previous owner has printed the state name in the right border of the front cover.
