Description: Delegate's Badge / Ticket / Lapel Pin / New Agency Photographs Author: (1928 Republican National Convention) Title: Delegate's Badge / Ticket / Lapel Pin / New Agency Photographs Description: Interesting small group of Republican National Convention artifacts from this event held in Kansas City, Missouri, at their Convention Hall from June 12 to June 15, 1928 and resulting in the nomination of Herbert Hoover for president and Charles Curtis for vice president. 1) First is a near pristine delegate's badge, a 1½" X 4½" heavy cloth ribbon of red, white and blue from which are attached two heavy gilt medal elements: At top (with pinback on verso) is a dramatic spread-eagled bald eagle whose talons clutch a white rectangle with gilt lettering that reads "DELEGATE"; near center is a small gilt rectangle with decorative flourishes and white area at center with gilt lettering reading "KANSAS CITY"; and beneath this hangs from two gilt chains an ornate gilt capitol dome with axe-wielding fasces at either side, a shield of red, white and blue enamel and "1928" in gilt at top and near the bottom the words "REPUBLICAN" and "NATIONAL" and "CONVENTION' on banners. Overall near fine. Bottom of ribbon shows slight curling caused by paper label attached to verso that notes "This Badge Manufactured By / The Whitehead & Hoag Co. / Makers of / Badges, Buttons, Banners, Signs / and Advertising Novelties" of Newark, New Jersey. 2) Ticket, heavy stock pale green 7¼" X 2 3/4", Kansas City, MO, "FIFTH DAY" (15 June 1928]. Fine. Wonderfully pristine entrance ticket (4½" X 2 3/4") for the "Guest-South Arena Balcony" (it even identifies "Door 4 Section J Row 2 Seat 8") still containing the two often-absent ticket stubs at right -- one for the "FIRST SESSION" and another for the "SECOND SESSION," with perforations strong. Still housed in the original 7 3/4" X 3" transmittal envelope, which notes in red print "GUEST" at lower left and "SOUTH ARENA BALCONY" at center. Worn and age toned. 3) Lapel Pin, 1" X ¼", n.p., n.y. Fine. Gilt edge, with "HOOVER" in gilt against bright blue enamel background. Pinback on verso. 4) Original glossy news agency photograph, 8" X 6", 22 October 1928. Very good. Inkstamped "International Newsreel" on verso, which also bears mimeographed paper label that captions the image "Hoover' Bid for New York's Votes," and describes the scene: "Photo shows a closeup of Herbert Hoover, Republican presidential candidate, making campaign address in Madison Square Garden here tonight." Hoover stands at a huge podium draped with American flags and bunting, politicos behind him and peanut gallery of attendees in the balconies far above him. 5) Similar to #4 except larger (10" X 8"), 17 September 1928. Very good. Mild edgewear and couple tiny edge chips. Mimeographed paper label on verso captions it "Hoover Speak at Newark in Opening Eastern Campaign" and text describes the scene: "Photo shows a general view of the proceedings at the Newark Armory here tonight, when Herbert Hoover, Republican presidential candidate made an address in opening the eastern campaign." Long view showing a dramatically spotlighted enormous crowd, a small podium at center with Hoover addressing the hordes. Though a small grouping, this archive features an outstanding delegate's badge and an entrance ticket with attached stubs and original envelope as fine and bright as you'll ever encounter.
