Description: THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY A HISTORY This sale is for an original 1928 FIRST EDITION 1st PRINTING of "THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY" by Frank R. Kent. YOU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK!!! The author of this work set out to tell the story of the Democratic party as a reporter, providing a connected narrative of the party from its beginning, detailing its most notable figures, its victories and defeats, its undeniable merits and national service as well as its faults and frequent futility. It does not assume that the reader knows nothing of history, so each and every fundamental fact is not harped on here, nor does it devote space to statistics, or any other mundane figures one could easily find in an almanac. The author notes that, political works of any description cannot be without controversy, however, his effort was to keep his analysis herein free from partisan bias. "The purpose is not to glorify the Democratic party but to tell the truth about it." The book follows the party from its birth under Thomas Jefferson in the 1790s through to the outlook for the Democrats from a 1928 perspective, just before the Great Depression. An interesting light is cast knowing what we know now, compared with what a 1928 Democrat might have hoped for without the benefit of hindsight. Such influential figures as Madison, Cleveland, and Wilson are a primary focus, as well as events like the Civil War, reconstruction, and the beginnings of the Progressive era. This is an interesting examination of the nation's oldest existing political party, through the ups and downs of its first 136 years. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Frank R. Kent (1877–1958) was an American journalist and political theorist of the 1920s and 1930s. His column in the Baltimore Sun, "The Great Game of Politics," was nationally syndicated to 140 papers nationwide, thanks in part to support from Franklin D. Roosevelt. Kent supported Republican President Herbert Hoover, but seemed to be agreeable to members of both sides of the aisle. In fact, the Maryland Democratic Party approached Kent to run for office. He declined because he opposed methods of campaign financing and preferred to conserve his independence. He would seem a good fit for the perusal of an unbiased history of one of our nation's two major political parties.
