Description: 1929 newspaper BOBBY JONES TIES for first place with AL Espinosa for first place in US OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP at Winged Foot Golf Course in Mamaroneck, NY - inv # 7W-307 SEE PHOTO-----An ORIGINAL sports section of a NEWSPAPER, the Des Moines Register (IA) June 30, 1929. This newspaper has a banner headline and large drawing with news of BOBBY JONES tying with Al Espinosa for first place in the US Open Golf Championship at WINGED FOOT GOLF CLUB in Mamaronek, NY. Jones would go on to win in a 36 hole playoff on the next day. The 1929 U.S. Open was the 33rd U.S. Open, held June 27–30 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, a suburb northeast of New York City. Bobby Jones won his third U.S. Open title in a 36-hole playoff, besting Al Espinosa by 23 strokes on the West Course. Jones opened with a 69 in the first round to grab the lead, then followed a with a 75. After a third round 71, he had a three-stroke lead over Gene Sarazen and was four clear of Espinosa after 54 holes. Sarazen fell out of contention in the final round with a 78 and fell to a tie for third place. Espinosa shot a 75 and a 294 total, but it appeared like it would not be enough to overtake Jones. Beginning with the 15th, Jones needed only three bogeys and a par to win the championship. However, he triple-bogeyed the 15th and then made another bogey on 16 and his lead was gone. He made par at the 17th, but his approach on the 18th found a greenside bunker. Needing to get up-and-down to save par and force a playoff, Jones rolled in a 12-foot putt for the tie. Jones dominated the 36-hole playoff on Sunday, with a 72 in the morning round to grab a 12-shot lead. Espinosa struggled again on the second 18, shooting an 80 to Jones' 69, and Jones won the playoff by 23 shots. He won his fourth U.S. Open in 1930 and the grand slam. This was the first of five U.S. Opens at Winged Foot's West Course; it later hosted in 1959, 1974, 1984, and 2006, as well as the PGA Championship in 1997. Winged Foot Golf Club is a club with two 18-hole golf courses located in Mamaroneck, New York. The course architect is A. W. Tillinghast, who also designed Baltusrol (Lower), Bethpage Black, Suburban Golf Club, Shackamaxon Country Club, San Francisco Golf Club, Cedar Crest Park, and nearby Quaker Ridge Golf Club, Scarboro Golf and Country Club in Toronto and Wykagyl Country Club. Winged Foot Golf Club was founded in 1921, by a consortium consisting mainly of members of The New York Athletic Club. The club gets its name and logo from the NYAC's logo, but the two have never had any direct affiliation. Opened 93 years ago in June 1923, application for membership to Winged Foot G.C. is by invitation only. The West Course is a par 72 measuring 7,264 yards; it has a course rating of 75.7 and a slope of 141. The East Course is a par 72 measuring 6,750 yards; it has a course rating of 73.9 and a slope of 141. Golf Digest' ranked the West Course 8th and the East Course 65th in its 2009-10 listing of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses.
