Description: Grenfell Industries mats were hand-woven in households throughout Newfoundland and Labrador from the 1910's through the late 1930's. The patterns and methods were standardized to ensure quality, while the use of reclaimed silk and hook weaving provide a distinct, handmade look and feel. These standardized patterns still had a limited run, as all handmade items do. Over time, mistreatment and mishap have made these mats an increasingly rare commodity. The colors on both sides are bright and vibrant, and the blend of cotton and silk is clearly recognizable to the touch. This is one of Grenfell's largest patterns, and one of several sled dog rescue scenes that were created over the three decades that Grenfell Industries produced rugs. These scenes were made with a particular level of care and attention that marks them as some of the most recognizable and desirable Grenfell pieces. This is a beautiful display piece where the muted colors allow for a sense of texture on the trees, effectively evoking the sense of snow. The intentionality of this technique is clear because the back shows the trees and sky in their typical Grenfell colors, making the back just as beautiful in a completely different way.
