Description: Original oil on canvas by Dutch artist Jan Van Weerden (Netherlands 1905-1975). The painting is an Indonesian scene depicting two women washing clothes riverside. The painting measures 14.5" x 11.37" (frame measures 19" x 15). The piece is signed lower right and has a Den Hague Gallery tag on verso. The painting is in very good condition and the colors remain vibrant. The period frame has a few nicks. He was trained as an artist by C. Bijl-Pfaff. He lived and worked in Kediri, Bandung, Blitar and Probolingo. In 1953 he settled in The Hague. He used several techniques including pastel, oil, watercolor and pen and ink. He was both an excellent painter and illustrator. Jan van Weerden was a member of the Indian Cultural Circle in The Hague. He died in The Hague in 1975.
