Description: This week I'm offering a number of old non-sport cards from various vintage sets. From the late 1920's to the mid-1930's, Germany experienced a flood of movie star card sets issued with cigarettes. Numerous tobacco manufacturers issued extensive photographic sets featuring mostly German actors and actresses, although a healthy sampling of American stars would be mixed into the sets as well. The backs would contain the card number and some generic advertising for the brand of cigarette, and the cards were designed to be pasted into ornate albums made available to the public. These sets numbered in the many hundreds and are of interest to movie buffs, as they feature performers who contributed to that era of German cinema, which is still considered one of the most creative and impressive in film history. Of course, as the decade wore on and the Nazis tightened their hold on pop culture, more and more actors left the country, justifyably fearing for their safety. The Nazis also discouraged the use of tobacco, so by 1937 the German cigarette card era had ended. Still, the cards themselves are of great historical value, and many collectors of non-sport cards find them fascinating. This lot is from the Josetti Filmbilder (movie photos) set, measuring 1 1/2" x 2 3/8", issued in the early 1930's in a series of three 272 card groups. This lot contains 69 different cards from Series Three (cards #545-816), which was issued by various Josetti brands including Juno, Vera and Ramses. See scans for condition; most cards show a little corner wear and some have mild centering issues, but overall they're not bad for cards that are almost ninety years old!
