The copy for sale is from the first printing of the first American edition, published in New York by Reynal & Hitchcock, simultaneously with the British publication. The book lacks a dustjacket but is otherwise in pretty good shape. The covers show some toning and general handling as seen in the photos. The binding is moderately rolled but still firm; remnants of an address label on the first page; the text has scattered soiling; no tears, creases, writing, etc. In all, at least an average copy of a rare first, at an unusually low price. Hardcover, 5" X 7.5', 206 pages, illustrations by Mary Shepard. Reynal & Hitchcock did not use the words "first edition" on their copyright pages; a first like this one is indicated simply by the date and the absence of any mention of later printings.
