Mrs. Albert T. Ni black, standing, instructs Mrs. Claude Swanson, wife of the Secretary of Navy, in the art of meking bandages. Mrs. Ni black is in charge of this work for the American Red Cross in Washington, D. C. The Red Cross has been supplying materials, funds and assistance to Ethiopia to help care for the wounded from the battlefields where Italien troops are invading their country. 11/5/35 Harris & Ewing photos. In 1935, the Red Cross was heavily involved in providing humanitarian aid during the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, which began in October of that year. Mrs. Claude Swanson, as the wife of the Secretary of the Navy, played a significant role in mobilizing support for the organization. The U.S. government's response was largely humanitarian, aiming to provide medical assistance and supplies to the victims of the conflict. Over the years, Mrs. Swanson became known for her philanthropic efforts, particularly in the areas of health and welfare, contributing to various national initiatives. === This 7x10 inch original type 1 (from original negative) photograph is from the personal collection of photographer Wes Howland (1906-1956). Howland was a reporter with the Harris-Ewing news service in Washington D.C from 1931-1941, and went on to serve with the military. He was one of a small number of photographers with complete access to the White House, Capitol, Senate, and House. This photo was part of a collection of over 1200 large photos from Wes Howland personal archive that we acquired from his estate. Included with the lot was the following note from a relative: "Periodically he would send his glossys to his mother. Soon after (joining the Marines) the newspaper of Harris & Ewing went out of business. As far as I know, the hundreds of pictures he took and sent his mother are one of a kind, and the only ones in existence. No prints have ever been made. I inherited them from my grandmother." Not only did Mr Howland have incredible access to the government figures of the day but he was a highly skilled photographer who produced some stunning historical images and documented Washington D.C. in the 1930s like few others.
