Shipman, (of) Kea'au Herbert Cornelius Shipman (1892-1976) The late Herbert C. Shipman was a Hapa-Hawaiian descendent of missionaries who came to Hawaii in 1854 and was a prominent kamaaina businessman and rancher on the east side of the Island of Hawaii during his entire adult life.He was especially noted as the initiator of the restoration of the Nene, Hawaii's State Bird.Herbert was also known as an orchid enthusiast, and as a popular raconteur. Herbert's father William H. Shipman was born on Maui, and he ended up buying all of the Kea'au ahupua'a, about 64,275 acres between the coast near Hilo all the way up to Kilauea volcano. Nene, the endangered Hawaiian goose (Nesochen sandvicensis)These birds were near extinction in 1918 when Herbert C. Shipman began an effort to save them by starting a breeding program at his Kea’au home.He later provided birds for other programs including the State of Hawaiʻi effort at Pohakuloa (now located at Olinda, Maui) and the program run by the Wildfowl Trust in England.
