Description: Here is a vintage glossy plate produced by Onondaga Pottery Company for their commercial china line "Syracuse". As with most of O.P. Co. products, the heavy plate was likely crafted for restaurant use, however, with its 22K gold embellishment it appears more of a decorative cabinet plate. Condition is fair with wear to some of the 22k gold designs along with utensil marks and edge paint loss, see last photo. This choice collectible measures 9.5" in diameter with 1" high sides. It weighs 1 lb 8.4 ounces. There's a maroon band on the rim where most of the gold edging has worn away. Intricate and ornate gold designs fill the majority of the plate and surround the center transferware. In the center is a transfer image of The Judgement of Paris from Greek mythology. The story goes that Paris, prince of Troy, who was raised as a shepherd is asked to judge the beauty of the three goddesses Venus, Juno, and Minerva. The Three Graces and Paris appear in a landscape setting. The name Angelica Kauffman is in tiny letters below although it may not be a rendition of her work but that of her style. The backstamp in green ink reads "O.P. CO. Syracuse R-4" with a metallic gold over-stamp that reads "22 Carat Gold Plate". The date code of R-4 places production during April 1937 in the Court Street plant of the Onondaga Pottery Co. Thanks for looking.
