Blaise Pascal ( 1623 - 1662) was a French mathematician , physicist , inventor , writer and Christian theologian. A child prodigy who was educated by his father, Pascal's earliest work was in the natural and applied sciences where he made important contributions to the study of fluids. Pascal also wrote in defence of the scientific method. In 1642, while still a teenager, he started some pioneering work on calculating machines. After several years of effort he succeeded, establishing him as one of the first two inventors of the mechanical calculator. Pascal was an important mathematician, helping create two major new areas of research in projective geometry and probability theory, strongly influencing the development of modern economics and social science. Following a religious experience in late 1654, Pascal began writing influential works on philosophy and theology. Throughout his life, Pascal was in frail health, especially after the age of 18; he died just two months after his 39th birthday. Pascal's " Thoughts " ( Pensees ) was first printed in 1669, after his death, found written on numerous scraps of paper. It is widely considered to be a masterpiece, and a landmark in French prose. Will Durant hailed it as "the most eloquent book in French prose". In " Thoughts " Pascal addressed many subjects, including : A General View Of Man , Vanity & Self Love , Man's Unhappiness , Truth & Happiness , The Necessity & Advantages of Religion , The Marks of True Religion , The Truth of Christianity , The Use of Reason , Reflections of a Man who is Weary of Searching after God , The Jews & Christianity , Jesus Christ , Proofs of Jesus Christ from the Bible Old Testament , Various Proofs of Jesus Christ , God's Design in Concealing Himself from some but revealing Himself to others , That True Christians and True Jews are of the Same Religion , Thoughts on Miracles , Thoughts on Death , Ancient & Modern Christians compared , Reflections on Geometry , the Art of Persuasion , etc., etc. " Pascal's Wager , " a famous argument concerning the existence of God , is in this work. ------------- Nice Condition Almost no wear to the binding.
