Combo deal saves us each a couple of bucks. 1938 - XF. Original coin, maybe rubbed a little, in excellent condition, weighs 12.4 grams. 1938 D - VF. Gently cleaned and tarnished coin. It's dull in color but it's shiny too. It isn't pink like you see a lot of times when a coin has been thoroughly well-cleaned and put up in an old folder. The color of this coin is best described as brown-bronze, very attractive, looks vintage. I nearly kept this coin because coins like this really spice up a collection. I don't believe it was put up in an old folder, because usually the edges will get tarnished the most and turn black/dark first. This coin likely resided in an envelope, cloth or leather bag, or just in a desk drawer with paper and things. One of the reasons I suggest that is because there are a few dark black fibers attached to the obverse. When it was gently cleaned, all the dirt and grime was not removed, so the details stand out, as you can see. An old scratch on the reverse, looks like staple. Not a low-level VF by any means. Coin weighs an amazing 12.5 grams, must have been at least 12.6-12.65 grams when minted. I checked this weight several times over several days and my scale just wouldn't show 12.4 grams reading.
