Description: 1940First EditionThe Longest Rope: The Truth aboutthe Johnson County Cattle WarD.F. Baber, as told by William ("Bill") WalkerGood condition (see photos)No writing50 +/- illustrations (see photos)pp. 320Dimensions: 9 1/4" x 6" x 1 1/8"The Longest Rope is an interesting firsthand account of the Johnson County War of 1892 between big Wyoming cattlemen and small homesteaders who were accused of rustling cattle. Bill Walker and Ben Jones were trappers who got caught in the middle of the war when they took shelter at a ranch just before the inhabitants (so-called rustlers) were attacked and murdered by a mob hired by the cattlemen. To prevent the trappers from testifying against them in court, the cattlemen arranged the kidnapping of Walker and Jones, who were taken across country to Rhode Island until all charges against the cattlemen were dropped. The appendix contains the confession of George Dunning, a rather unwilling participant in the mob's assault on the KC Ranch and the murders of Nate Champion and Nick Ray. Written in 1892, his account is an excellent summary of this violent chapter in the history of the range wars of the Old West.
