Boy catches 100 dollar softball thrown from monument - Washington, D.C. -- Congressional softball players, Lowell Thomas' group of "nine old men," big game hunters, humorists, commentators, etc., were all out maneuvered today when at 16 year old Michigan boy matched Charles "Gabby" Street's feat of catching a ball thrown from the top of the Washington Monument. But there's a catch - the ball was a softball and came floating down on a parachute. Nine balls were thrown from the Monument but only one was caught. The stunt was arranged as a result of a discussion on the "Vox Pop" program as to how difficult it would be to catch a ball thrown from the monument. Walter Johnson and Charley Butterworth put up $100 as a prize for any member of the teams of the Congressional or Thomas' nine old men who could catch one. After McNeil caught the ball he was immediately signed up as the newest member of the "nine old men" and Butterworth then gave Thomas a $100 bill to add to the charity receipts from his afternoon's game between the two teams. The boy was given the ball after it was autographed. Pictures shows Lowell Thomas and Bernard McNeil as the stunt was being broadcasted (Washington, D.C.) (Lowell Thomas) Photo measures 8.5 x 6.75 inches. Photo Is dated 1941. PHOTO FRONT PHOTO BACK Historic Images Part Number: afx31316 Sell Smarter with Kyozou.Inventory and Ecommerce Management
