Description: 1941 - Village At War; Anthony Armstrong; Illustrated, with Hand Drawn Cartoon Sketch Signed by Bertram Prance 1943 A one off, original hand drawn pen and Ink sketch to the front endpaper - signed by the books illustrator Bertram Prance and dated 1943 - he has named the sketch, The Billetee! Bertram Stanley Prance (5 December 1889 - 9 August 1958) was a British artist, poster artist and illustrator who worked as a cartoonist for Punch magazine. Prance's works were also featured in publications like The Humorist, London Opinion, and Tatler. He was also in high demand as a book illustrator, collaborating with Anthony Armstrong and B.C. Hilliam. A notable piece of his work was the cover/dust jacket design for this book "Village at War" - a humorous fictional account of village life during World War II, penned by Armstrong - published in 1941. Prance resided in Rudgwick, West Sussex, where he built a house called Chudleigh. Artist W. Heath Robinson was his neighbour, and they formed a friendship. During World War II, his beloved house 'Chudleigh' was requisitioned by the British Army, and Prance returned to Bideford.
