Description: 1943 Press Photo U.S. Lockheed Lightnings and Liberators Raid Japanese on Attu This is an original press photo. American occupation of the outer ring of Japanese defenses on Attu and aerial views of landings made in the combined Army and Navy operations are shown in these photos made by Navy photographers, May 17 to 21,1943. Difficulties which faced the Americans and how they were overcome are depicted. The Japanese had dug in and established an elaborate trench system from which the Americans drove them. The pictures were flown from the scene by Naval Air Transport. This is what the aerial camera saw at ...... Harbor, the Japanese' strong position on Attu Island, following a raid by American Lockheed Lightnings (P-38) and Consolidated Liberators (B-24) on May 21. The photographer's brief message from his plane told the story of Japanese resistance and American determination: "AA (anti-aircraft) fire got our antenna, bombsight, starboard wing and waist window. No one hurt, send more film." Photo measures 10 x 8.25inches. Photo is dated 5-28-1943.
