More info on the OPA and the ration books: The Office of Price Administration or the OPA was a subsection of the Office for Emergency Management established under Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941. The purpose of this would-be temporary branch of the government was to manage the rationing of goods and place price ceilings on items. Many common household items like butter, gasoline, sugar had to be diverted to the war effort against the Axis powers; therefore, it made Americans carry around ration books like these. To purchase goods from any grocery store, a citizen would have to use a certain amount of stamps on their ration card or OPA ration tokens. Each stamp had a picture like wheat, airplanes, tanks, etc., to represent a specific good. Eventually the OPA shut down in 1946 and was officially dissolved in 1947. These books are a neat look into what the common citizen had to go through during the war, sacrificing the abundance of basic goods that we see today.
