Description: This nice first edition hard back cook book by Mrs. B.C. Howard is in very good condition with binding intact and contains 430 recipes from the 19th century. This post-depression cook book was published in 1944 by Barrows and Company. This book was taken from the recipes of a Mrs. Jane Grant Gilmore, born in 1801 and married to Benjamin Chew Hoard in 1818. Harper's Magazine thought so well about her culinary recipes that they published an article about Mrs. Howard in 1882, which became a favorite of Marylanders and other Mid-Atlantic cooks. While not organized like contemporary cookbooks, a long conversational introduction expounds upon the uniqueness of Maryland cooking, and one can still search for favorite selections in the index. Mince Pies, macaroni and cheese, garlic butter, german sald, shellfish dishes, cakes, puddings, fritters, and frostings. Own an amazing bit of Maryland culinary history from the 19th century.
