Description: This collectible book was owned by Mary Schwartz of 230 Ellis St. -- inscribed on title page. Born in 1895, she lived in Long Beach (LA County) and was President of the American War Mothers Chapter there; she hosted fundraising dinners for them. Mary took good care of her book. It's a wonderful source on WW II-era life, with a section called "Wartime Cookery." The book shows how wives and mothers planned for feeding their families in America throughout the late 1930s-1940s. The 1944 printing, it has the bluish-green cover which has faded somewhat in areas. Inside the book, binding is intact, pages clean, and color plates and thumb-index tabs are crisp. Mary left a few clippings between the pages, and made a few handwritten notes with measurement equivalents or a favorite page number. Some recipes or index entries have an X by them.Minor corner-bumping from shelf-sitting over 70 years. Over 800 pages. Don't see dog ears or finger prints. Similar in content and purpose to the classic Joy of Cooking, this is a compendium of culinary knowledge. Unlike the Joy, it includes full color illustrations (color plates were courtesy of the Carnation Company, pioneers in color illustration of for food products). See pictures for style and condition --- and interesting content such as Entertaining Without a Maid, all about spices, and Wartime Cookery. Please email with any questions!
