Description: Vintage 1945 USGS Geologic Atlas Color Map Folios Hollidaysburg Huntingdon Pennsylvania Complete Original large vintage United States Department of the Interior Geological Survey Map Folio from 1945 This is No 227 dated 1945 by Charles Butts 18 ½” x 22” This folio is complete Charles Butts (1863-1946) was a paleontologist and authority on the Paleozoic formations of the Appalachian region. He received the B.S. in 1899, and the M.S. in 1900 from Alfred University. Butts joined the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in 1901 as Assistant Geologist, and was promoted to Paleontologist in 1909 and Geologist in 1912. He remained with the USGS until his retirement from federal service in 1933. From 1933 until his death, Butts was employed by the Virginia Geological Survey (VGS) to conduct mapping of the Paleozoic formations of the Appalachian valley. During his career with the USGS, Butts conducted extensive geological surveys in Alabama, Kentucky, and Virginia. Geological survey atlas folios were published from 1892 to 1945, and originally intended to provide 15' quadrangle coverage the entire United States. That goal was never achieved but the 227 numbered, and half dozen topical or experimental atlas folios that were published provide fine examples of the quality, scope and mission that made the USGS the premier cartographic institution in the era predating the digital age.
