This seven volume set looks at prominent Belgian artists from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A lot of these artists were colleagues and knew each other well. This set contains; 'Gustave de Smet', written by Leo van Puyvelde and published in 1949. With a coloured frontispiece, portrait of Smet, and twenty-four plates. Smet was one of the founders of Flemish Expressionism, and worked with a mixture of Expressionism and Cubuism. Puyvelde was a Belgian art historian, and was considered one of the art experts in Belgium at the time. 'Victor Rousseau', written by Richard Dupierreux and published in 1949. With a frontispiece, and twenty-eight plates. Rousseau was a sculptor, having his work displayed at the Botanical Garden of Brussels, and at the Art Nouveau Hotel Hannon in Belgium. Dupierreux was an art critic, becoming the head of the artistic and theatre contributions in 'Le Soir'. 'Leon de Smet', written by Philippe Morel de Boucle St Denis' and published in 1949. With a coloured frontispiece, portrait of Smet, and twenty-four plates. Smet was the younger brother of Gustave de Smet. He was a distinguished artist, and was heavily influenced by the Impressionists. Morel de Boucle Saint-Denis was an artist himself, best known for his portraits and still-lifes. 'Constant Permeke', written by Em. Langui and published in 1947. With a coloured frontispiece, portrait of Permeke, and twenty-four plates. Permeke was a sculptor, and was a leading figure in Flemish Expressionism. Langui was an art historian, writing for the weekly publication 'Vooruit' about art. He published works about other artists, including Paul Delvaus and Marino Marini. 'Valerius de Saedeleer', written by Jan Walravens and published in 1949. With a coloured frontispiece, portrait of Saedeleer', and twenty-four plates. Saedeleer was a landscape painter, and was a prominent figure in modernist trends in painting. Walravens was an essayists, who founded the experimental magazine 'Tijd en Mens'. 'Emile Claus', written by Francois Maret, published in 1949. With a coloured frontispiece, portrait of Claus, and twenty-four plates. Claus was a painter, who found himself inspired by his cottage in Astene, which had a beautiful view of the river Lys. Maret was an art critic and painter, who was the editor of 'Tribune Dramatique' and translated a lot of Dutch critical art books. 'James Ensor Aquafortiste', written by Louis Lebeer and published in 1952. With a frontispiece and twenty-eight plates. Ensor was a painter who was an important influence on expressionism and surrealism . As he aged, he begun to favour more colourful pieces with more bizarre subject matters. Lebeer was an art historian. Collated, complete. CONDITION In the original publisher’s quarter cloth binding, with ‘Emily Claus’, ‘Valerius de Saedeleer’, ‘Leon de Smet’, ‘Victor Rosseau’, ‘Gustave de Smet’, and ‘Constant Permeke’ being in imitation of morocco, with paper to the boards, and in the original unclipped dustwappers. Externally, smart. Very minor bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Light bump to the head of the front and rear board of ‘Gustave de Smet’. Very minor edgewear to the dustwrappers. Light marking to the wraps and to the spines, causing a little discolouration due to the light colour. Chip to the head of the front wrap to ‘Emile Claus’, as well as some light creasing to the rear joint. Small closed tear to the head of the front wrap of ‘Leon de Smet’.nVery small chip to the tail of the spine to ‘Valerius de Saedeleer’. Light chipping and closed tears to the head of the front and rear wrap and spine of ‘Victor Rosseau’. Small markings to the reverse of the dustwrapper. Large chip to the head of the front board, onto the head of the spine and rear board, of ‘Gustave de Smet’. A little light discolouration to the reserve of the dustwrapper to ‘Constant Permeke’. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Plates 17 to 20 of ‘Constant Permeke’ have been creased to the fore edge.
