A THIS IS A VINTAGE HEIRLOOM ICL WITH LAVISH GILT IMPRESSIONS TO THE BOARDS AND SPINE BOOK DONE IN ACTUAL 24K GOLD. IT IS ONE OF THE MOST HIGHLY-PRIZED EDITIONS OF THIS DICKENS CLASSIC. 🍍 NOT INCLUDED… 😃 The International Collectors Library was a book club series published by Doubleday Book & Music Clubs, Inc. from the late 1940’s through the late 1980’s.Generally, the books followed the 8-1/2″ x 5-3/4″ book size format. The binding designs were adapted based on old “Golden Age of Bookmaking” bindings, and made to look like leather-bound copies (leatherette). The bindings were embossed with 24K gold embellishments, and some copies had gilt edges (thin layer of gold leaf) applied. A sewn in satin ribbon marker was also added in most books. There were over 400 editions published in a variety of bindings. Some editions came with loose-leaf inserts that described the book club, the bindings and design styles, and a story synopsis of the book-in-hand.ABOUT THE BOOK: Main Street, the story of an idealistic young woman's attempts to reform her small town, brought Lewis immediate acclaim when it was published in 1920. It remains one of the essential texts of the American scene. Lewis Mumford observed: "In Main Street an American had at last written of our life with something of the intellectual rigor and critical detachment that had seemed so cruel and unjustified [in Charles Dickens and Matthew Arnold]. Young people had grown up in this environment, suffocated, stultified, helpless, but unable to find any reason for their spiritual discomfort. Mr. Lewis released them."Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951), was born in Sauk Centre, Minnesota and graduated from Yale in 1907. In 1930 he became the first American recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Main Street (1920) was his first critical and commercial success. Lewis's other noted books include Babbitt (1922), Arrowsmith (1925), Elmer Gantry (1927), Dodsworth (1929), and It Can't Happen Here (1935).CONDITION: Book is in LIKE NEW condition for its age with minimal sheflwear to the to the edges of the boards and a darkening to the front pastedown (SEE PICS FOR FURTHER DETAILS).
