He is the author of the book Story of a Real Man about Soviet World War II fighter pilot Aleksey Maresev. Story About a True Man (also translated as Story of a Real Man), based on the life of Alexey Maresyev, was an immensely popular novel. It was eventually made into an opera. It was first published in English in 1952, and was reprinted in 1970.
