Description: 1952 Bowman Football Large - #32 Ray Mathews - Pittsburgh Steelers - PSA 8 (OC) On the Set - The 1952 Bowman Football Large Set stands out as one of the most aesthetically pleasing sports collections ever produced. Created by the Bowman Gum Company of Philadelphia, PA, the set featured vibrant illustrations of both seasoned professional players and emerging college talents. Due to football's lesser popularity compared to baseball during the 1950s, these cards were manufactured in limited quantities in contrast to their baseball counterparts, rendering them difficult to find today, particularly in top-grade condition. In tandem with their successful smaller-sized releases, Bowman opted in 1952 to introduce the oversized Bowman Large football series. These new editions measured 2 ½” x 3 ¾” and featured colorized depictions of the subjects arranged in both vertical and horizontal orientations. The reverse of the cards presented biographical and statistical information, along with assigned card numbers. On the front, atop the player or coach's image, was a slanted, dual-tailed pennant displaying their name and team association. The relevant professional or college logos were incorporated. This entire presentation was framed by a white border. On the Player - Raymond Dyral Mathews (1929-2015) was a halfback and end in the National Football League for the Pittsburgh Steelers (1951–1959) and Dallas Cowboys (1960). He played college football for the Clemson Tigers. In 1978, he was inducted into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame.
