1952 Sherwood Dixon for Illinois Governor Newspaper Advertising

Description: StLouBrown's bygone Days "Let BYgones Be Back" Vintage 1952 newspaper advertisement for Sherwood Dixon, a Democrat running for Illinois governor. Dixon (1896-1973) served as lieutenant governor under Gov. Adlai Stevenson II from 1949 to 1953. Stevenson planned to run for re-election but was drafted as the Democratic nominee for president. That paved the way for Dixon to step up, but he was defeated in the general election by 38-year-old Republican William G. Stratton. The ad pictures two children who “aren’t old enough to remember – but you are!” It’s a reference to the two terms of Republican Gov. Dwight Green, whom Stevenson beat in 1948. The ad claims, “You remember the Green Gang … and eight long years of corruption in Illinois.” Ad is attached to thin cardstock; it was removed from a scrapbook. On the reverse is a news story about legislators getting loans arranged by state auditor Orville Hodge. Hodge would go to prison three years later when he was caught stealing $6.15 million of state funds. Ad measures 10 1/8” x 7 ¼”.
