One of the most exciting and memorable chapters in motorsports featured a flamboyant young man from California named J.C. Agajanian. Wearing his trademark cowboy hat and custom-made Spanish boots, J.C. crisscrossed the country promoting races, discovering drivers, and building race cars. He was one of the brightest stars during those glory days of racing. From dirt tracks to paved ovals, Agajanian's race cars thundered around American tracks winning races and setting records. Then in 1952, Agajanian arrived at the Indianapolis 500 with an exceptional dirt-track race car that was destined to sweep across the history of motorsports like a chariot of fire. On Memorial Day that year, 22 year old Troy Ruttman roared into history and set a new track record at 128.922 mph to become the youngest drived to win the Indy 500. It was one of the wildest and most popular Victory Lane celebrations of all time, and at the center of it all set the Agajanian Special. Indeed, it is such stories as this that creates the mythology of any sport. As a young boy, J.C. Agajanian had always dreamed of becoming a race car driver - a dream that was never fulfilled. Yet, Agajanian himself was such a part of motorcar racing, as a race-car builder, race promoter, discoverer of drivers, that he holds a rightful place in the Motorsports Hall of Fame. The Agajanian Race Car was built in 1950 to be an extraordinary dirt and pavement racer, with an Indianapolis 500 victory in mind. When is debuted in 1951, its performance was less than stellar - it completed one of the most exciting Indy races of all time. Although it was behind as late as lap 191, the Ruttman-driven Agajanian Special not only raced to victory and a new speed record, but was also the last of the dirt-track, front-engine models to do so.
