The entire engine—gear unit consisting of large,smooth aluminum castings, is mounted, car fashion, in rubber toeffectually dampen any vibrations. The engine itself is an ultramodern overhead camshaft twin of 500cc capacity mounted "foreand aft” in the frame. Crankcase and cylinders are a one piecealuminum alloy casting. Cylinders have removable iron alloy lin-ers. The cylinder head is likewise a one piece alloy casting withvalve seat inserts.Camshaft drive is a totally enclosed, automatically tensionedroller chain. All cam and rocker gear are enclosed and speciallylubricated. Connecting rods are aluminum alloy with car type bigend inserts. The massive crankshaft is supported by a deep grooveball bearing at front and a specially designed shell type plainbearing at the rear.A Vokes "oil dip” type air cleaner is provided. Amal suppliesthe carburetors.Lubrication is handled by the car type wet sump system withpressure feed to big end and camshaft bearings. Ignition is cartype coil with large generator driven directly off front of crank-shaft.Directly driven by the engine, a large single plate dry clutchtransmits power to a heavy duty four speed gearbox. Shiftingis accomplished with the foot operated positive stop lever.From the transmission rearwards drive is via shaft incorporat-ing a shock absorber and a needle bearing type universal joint.Final drive from shaft to wheel is by totally enclosed wormgear.The Sunbeam frame is an exceptionally heavy double tubeduplex type with massive, hydraulically controlled telescopic forksand plunger rear springing. Unusual in a British motorcycle arethe 450 x 16 front and 4.75 x 16 rear tires and 814" wide deepsection fenders.
