The moral of this fable can be understood in different ways. The most obvious layer of the fable is ingratitude. It was immediately clear that the wolf was greedy and evil, and the moral was that one should not expect gratitude from such people. But there is a second layer: that one cannot demand gratitude for a good deed. After all, if you do something just for the sake of a reward, then this is no longer a good deed, but an ordinary cynical calculation.
