Description: Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Precision Bass in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, complete with its original receipt/layaway paperwork from '64 and a vintage hardshell case. Featuring a stunningly accurate body-only refinish in Sherwood Green courtesy of Riggio Custom Guitars, this Precision Bass is a deeply resonant instrument, channeled through the original black bobbin pickup. This bass has lived in the Pacific Northwest for its entire life, complete with the original layaway paperwork dated to 1964 from the Lights For Music instrument shop in Springfield, Oregon. Tonewoods include an alder body paired with a maple neck and Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, delivering a rich, balanced natural acoustic sound. Strung with a fresh set of 45-100 D'addario Chrome flatwound strings, the split coil black bobbin pickup delivers plenty of fullness and woody thump with excellent treble articulation and a sweet, defined tonal character in every register. The bass weighs 9lbs 2oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action and accurate intonation. The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with slight shoulders, rolled fretboard edges and a fast, effortless feel, measuring .785" deep at the 1st fret and .975" at the 12th. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard is a dark cut of this tonewood, and the original slender frets have been leveled and crowned, currently exhibiting only faint wear beneath the A and D strings on frets 1-5. The bass plays cleanly up the 34" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The original nut measures 1 3/4" in width. The headstock face retains the original Precision Bass waterslide decal, and the original nickel-plated long stem clover-button tuning machines turn smoothly and hold pitch well. The neck heel has a May, 1964 date stamp. The electronics, hardware, and plastics are all 100% original, and the black bobbin split coil pickup is wired to a pair of Stackpole pots, with visible date codes from the 20th week of '64. Hardware includes the original bridge with spiral saddles, L-prefix neck plate, knurled knobs, and pair of "ashtray" bridge and pickup covers. Plastics comprise the pickup covers, finger rest and the original vibrant nitrate red tortoise pickguard, complete with aluminum shielding plate. The pickguard exhibits a small amount of usual shrinkage, with one tiny split at the bass-side waist mounting hole The nitro lacquer Sherwood Green finish was executed by Riggio Custom Guitars, exceedingly accurate to vintage spec. There is no wear beyond Riggio’s subtle aging on the body, comprising very faint horizontal lacquer checking, light simulated buckle wear, and a few additional nicks. The neck profile exhibits overspray from a couple different instances in the instrument’s lifetime, and the majority of that overspray has been subsequently removed, leaving a smooth satin-esque feel on the profile length (despite a somewhat visually uneven appearance). A center latch "knucklebuster" hardshell case is included. The case actually pre-dates the instrument and was originally ostensibly paired with a stack knob Jazz Bass. The original gold interior is intact along with brown leather ends, and the case exterior has been retolexed in black. The original layaway paperwork and matching receipt are also included.
