Frederic Rea is the publisher of Pacific Travel News, a monthly travel industry magazine published on behalf of the Pacific Area Travel Association or PATA. The information and photo files of the magazine and PATA have been used extensively in compiling the book. Particular credit should go to Mary Benton Smith and Mimi Bell as researchers and writers on this project. Information was also based on a recent trip by Sunset's travel editor, Martin Litton. Special thanks also go to Japan Airlines for making available their excellent photo library. Nealy half of the photographs used were furnished by Japan Air Lines. Photos 1 and 2 show the front cover and back cover. Photo # 3 shows the Title Page. Photos 4 and 5 show the Table of Contents and Foreword. Photo # 6 shows a map of Japan. Photo # 7 shows Mt. Fuji, the symbol of Japan rises 12, 397 feet and is considered one of the two most beautiful conical volcanoes in the world. The book does not say what the other most beautiful conical volcanoes is, so I would like to name my choice. See photo # 8. My choice is the Mayon Volcano in southeastern, Luzon, Philippines, dominating the City of Legaspi. Called the world's most perfect volcano because of the symmetry of its shape, it has a base of 80 miles and rises 8,077 feet from the shores of Albay Gulf. The photo is not in the Sunset Book, I just put it there for reference. Photo # 9 shows the scenic coastline of the Misake area. Japan has nine miles of coastline for every square mile of land. Misake is located at the southwestern tip of the Osaka Prefecture, with the Izumi Mountains and Wakayama Prefecture to the south and Osaka Bay to the north. The economy of Misaki is centered on commercial fishing, agriculture and forestry. The town is famous for its production clay roof tiles. Photo # 10 shows Mitohama Beach, one the Izu Peninsula which is dotted with hot springs, fishing villages and breathtaking views of Mt. Fujo. Shelf # H.
