A New Zoo site, proposed by the Minnesota Zoological Society for the Battle Creek area of Maplewood, would look like this in its "first phase." This artist's sketch shows a proposed parking area, which initially would hold 1,000 cars, and a route for a "scenic railway" that would wind through the park. The administration area would overlook a courtyard and extensive mall and would consist of offices, lecture hall, concessions and an animal hospital, with room for a restaurant. Behind a "kiddie's zoo" is a contemplated landmark- a water tower that would serve also as an observatory and aviary. The range animal area is designed to enable specimens to exercise and be observed in natural surroundings. The preliminary plan, characterized by Mayan-Aztec Indian culture architecture, was prepared by St. Paul architects, R. Michael Schneider and Howard H. Heine. Photo measures 10 x 8inches.
