Description: 1966 Vintage Press Photo.Bust of Countess Markievicz, who was second in command of garrison at the College of Surgeons. Born in London, the countess grew up in Ireland. She married a Polish count but returned to Ireland to fight for freedom in 1916. Sentenced to death after the surrender, the countess' sentence was commuted to life imprisonment, along with 82 others. Constance Georgine Markievicz, also known as Countess Markievicz and Madame Markievicz, was an Irish politician, revolutionary, nationalist, suffragist, socialist, and the first woman elected to the Westminster Parliament, and was elected Minister for Labour in the First Dáil, becoming the first female cabinet minister in Europe.
