Description: 11 November 1967 (Armistice Veterans' Day). Parker Stadium, Corvallis. Southern California USC vs Oregon State OSU. Official program 40 pages. Great program to supplement great fanfare and a great GREAT football game. The fanfare included a salute to the 1942 Beavers, victorious in the 1942 transplanted Rose Bowl vs Duke. Both of the state governors were present, Ronald Reagan of California and Tom McCall of Oregon along with 3 medal of honor recipients including one of America's greatest airmen JIMMY DOOLITTLE. The field was muddy particularly between the 25 yard lines. Leading to this November afternoon in Corvallis the number one Trojans (8-0-0) had won out against stalwart opposition Michigan State, Texas, Washington and Notre Dame. Tearing up defenses was their newest star OJ Simpson a 200 pound running back with all of the durability and skills of the position plus an important additional feature, world class speed. Every time he carried the ball he was a threat to score. The Beavers had great moments before this game too, an away victory against powerhouse Purdue and an away draw against the UCLA Bruins. Both teams had been ranked number two prior to their encounters against the Orangemen. Soon after kickoff it became apparent that points would become a premium. Mike Haggard's 30 yard field goal in the 2nd quarter would be the only points of the afternoon. Simpson's breakaway later in the quarter was taken down from behind by the cross field heroic effort of Jess Lewis on the State 32 yard line. It would prove to be the last threat of the day. Two dominating defenses would prevent any further offensive ventures for the day. First downs would be scarce Troy 9 to 8, rushing yards Troy 200 to 196, passing Oregon State 8 yards to 6 yards. The Juice was magnificent that day with 188 yards on the ground while the Earthquake (Bill Enyart) countered with 135 yards of his own. Besides Simpson the Trojans counted on Earl McCullouch, Ron Yary, Tim Rossovich, Adrian Young, Pat Cashman, Jim Gunn, Nate Shaw and Mike Battle. For the Orangemen there was John Didion, Joe Mihelich, Billy Main, Skip Vanderbundt, Jon Sandstrom, Bill Nelson, Jess Lewis, Harry Gunner and Charlie Olds. An incredible day the best game I ever saw. This program was impossible to get that afternoon as the vendors were sold out!
