Formula 1 Enterprises was founded by Karl Ludvigsen who was actually a car designer at GENERAL MOTORS in the 1950s. While this wheel is a highly coveted item for vintage Porsche cars of the era, the 1969 Pontiac Trans Am Prototype car ads showed and used this exact MOMO wheel in advertising. In fact, it was this Momo wheel design that Pontiac "borrowed" from in making their own "Formula" wheel used in 1970 to 1981 Trans Ams. It was originally Ben Harrison (who created the 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix) that bought one of the first Firebird 400’s in 1967. He loved the car, but hated the plastic steering wheel. He found this MOMO “Formula 1” steering wheel at Gratiot Auto Supply or someplace, and made up a custom woodgrain center cap for it. He put it on his Firebird, and it stayed on there as long as he owned the car. It was then John DeLorean who liked the styling of this MOMO steering wheel so much, that he had Jack Humbert’s people in the PMD Styling Studio create their own version -- and they called it the “Formula” wheel. However all they did was wrap the bottom hole to differentiate it. This is also where the name of the Firebird models 'Formula 400' and 'Formula 455' etc came from. The Pontiac 'Formula' wheel then became available at the very end of the 1969 model year, on Trans Am cars only. You will however see that this exact MOMO steering wheel was used in an early ad for the 1969 Pontiac Trans Am. Please view all zoomable pics and ask any and all questions.
