Located in what was then a wilderness, temperatures frequently dropped to 50 below zero, and wild animals were their neighbors. At the time there were only six professors and 22 students. Patty's first class consisted of 20 prospectors. The book also relates Patty's experiences directing a mining company, his wife's work with Indian children and his fight for Alaska statehood. Hardcover, with original jacket, 272 pages. Maps on endpapers. Black and white photographic illustrations. Very good condition, dust jacket has one tiny closed tear at top of front, slightly ruffled at top of spine.
