Charlotte's Web is a book of children's literature by American author E. B. White and illustrated by Garth Williams about a girl named Fern, a pig named Wilbur and a spider called Charlotte. Summary: Fern is horrified when she finds out that the runt of a litter of piglets is to be slaughtered. She rescues, nurtures the pig, and names him Wilbur but when Wilbur becomes a nice fat pig, Fern’s father sells him to another farm where Wilbur is fattened for bacon, only to be saved once again by a barn spider named Charlotte who makes Wilbur a prize pig ensuring his place on the farm forever. The book was a popular and critical success when it appeared in the fall of 1952. In a review in the New York Times (October 15, 1952) Eudora Welty praised White’s melding of the whimsical and the profound. “The book has liveliness and felicity, tenderness and unexpectedness, grace and humor and praise of life and the good backbone of succinctness that only the most highly imaginative stories seem to grow."
