We were wrong.When the Man From Bui un-loaded the shiny new ’Sang from hisfunky be-stickied pickup, we all saidthe same things. “Hey, nice.”“Clean.” “Far out.” “What is real-ity?” And the Bui just sat there andsaid back, “Gleam, glisten, shine,sparkle.” Needless to say, we wereimpressed. The Bultaco is a finelooking machine, beautifully func-tional, smooth, clean and indeed farout. It’s the kind of machine you liketo show up at the track with. No-body is going to stand around andoh-ah it, but they’ll look.And when they look, they’llTHINK the same things wethought. "Yeah, but it’s a Bultacoand we all know Bultacos just don’tcut it on the motocross course.Let’s face it. Although Bultaco hascarved a winning reputation fromflattrack, TT and scrambles compe-tition, a lot. of people think they justhaven’t got their act together formotocross.Why do they think that? Becausethey’ve been conditioned to thinkthat. Bultaco has a reputation forbuilding pipey 125 sliders that break.None of these characteristics lendthemselves to fast motocrossin’, soeverybody now races non-Bultacoslike Penton, DKW, etc. ("etc.’’meansyou know and we know but we'renot going to bother typing it.)
