It had little townsevery few miles and lots of hills and curves. And it was crowdedwith long parades of impatient cars led by noisy, plodding dieseltrucks. The opening of 1-74 ended all that. It carves its way through thehills with four big lanes. Now you could leave the trucks behindand make time! It’s just the tiling if you are in a hurry. . .or hatetraveling. But if you enjoy touring instead of just getting from Point A toPoint B in the shortest possible time; if a challenging set ofcurves is more to your liking than a long straight stretch; if youprefer a little scenery on the way instead of the tedious samenessof the freeway system; if you would like a peek at what Americareally looks like — then “Old Fifty-Two” — and a hundred high-ways just like it across the country — should be your cup of tea.The neatest thing about these old roads is that you can have thempretty much to yourself. Nobody uses them much anymore soyou can set your own pace. Turn up the wick and you can playKenny Roberts to your heart’s content. The curves are all
