Description: Title: Sky and Telescope Date: October, 1975 Pagination: about 70pp in each issue (pp 209–270 in this issue) Condition: Good; covers scuffed and dingy from storage; no address label visible; some issues in this collection have had a bit of highlighting (they belonged to an Astronomy teacher); some foxing on fore-edge and bottom of text block where it sat on the shelf [OCR is approximate, as always] OCTOBER, 1975 COVER: Riding atop a pillar of flame, a Titan 3E-Centaur with the first Viking payload thunders away from Launch Complex 41 at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This four-stage rocket, which has a launch thrust of 2.4 million pounds, had been successfully used on only one other occasion. Less than half an hour after the August 20th liftoff at 5:22 p.m. Eastern daylight time, the Centaur upper stage was reignited for more than five minutes, placing the spacecraft on a trajectory that will intercept Mars in June of next year. If all goes according to plan, the first of two Viking landers will touch down on the Martian surface early next July to perform an elaborate series of scientific experiments. NASA photograph.
