Description: TO RAVENSRIGG Written by Hester Burton. Published by Oxford University Press, London. Copyright 1976; “First published 1976” is stated on the copyright page with no other printing dates noted—a first edition. From Wikipedia: Hester Burton (6 December 1913 – 17 September 2000) was an English writer, mainly of historical fiction for children and young adults. She received the Carnegie Medal for her 1963 novel Time of Trial, which like many of her books was illustrated by Victor Ambrus. DESCRIPTION: 148 pages 8 3/4 x 5 5/8 inches first edition hardcover with dustjacket CONDITION: This hard-cover book is in very good condition with a near fine dust jacket. The blue cloth hardcover is clean and shows only slight wear at the corners and spine ends. There is a name printed at the top of the front pastedown. The front endpaper has been torn out. The interior is otherwise excellent with no marks, underlining, tears creases, foxing or odor. The hinges and binding are excellent with no loose or missing pages. The dust jacket is complete with price intact on the front flap, There is slight rubbing of the edges. There is a bit if a crease along the front edge near the spine, but I think this is a production “flaw” and not caused by any use. This dust jacket will come protected in a new Brodart mylar dust jacket protector. From the dust jacket description: ’Ravensrigg? Where in heaven’s name was Ravensrigg, she asked herself, almost in panic. And what awaited her there —even if she could find it? What was to happen to her—with no parents; no friends; no money; with nothing but the name Ravensrigg to attach her to the world?’ A sudden and tragic disaster has separated Emma Hesket from her confined life in her aunt’s home, and the very foundations of her existence seem to have been destroyed. Emmie has always possessed a strong will and the capacity for courageous action; the strange days of confusion that follow are to test these qualities to their utmost. Hester Burton’s new novel is set in the late eighteenth century, and its story of Emmie’s search for identity and love is unfolded against a background of an England whose conscience is torn by the iniquities of the slave-trade.
