1978 DJ APPLE OF MY EYE New York City Guide Unusual Sites PHOTOS Helene Hanff

Description: Title: Apple Of My Eye A Personal Tour Of New York Author: Helene Hanff Publisher: Doubleday (1978) Description:A great writer, Helene Hanff author of the well known 84 Charing Cross Road, writes about New York in a log / diary fashion accompanied by terrific photos. Covers various parts of the city with Hanff's observations providing a unique guidebook to Manhattan. The original printing hardcover with dustjacket can be expensive and hard to find. Here's a copy for a decent starting price. From the dust jacket flap:A scintillating walking tour of New York conducted by a delightfully devoted New Yorker. Join Helene Hanff as she leads native and newcomer alike up, down, and around the Big Apple—the world's most remarkable city and the city she takes great pride in calling home. It was on April Fools’ Day that Helene Hanff dashed home from a meeting with her editor to call her friend Patsyand tell her: “I’ve got the dream assignment of all time! I'm going to write an illustrated book on New York City and if I’m an expert on nothing else, I’m an expert on New York, New York! I know it like the back of my hand. I’ve lived here all my adult life.” It wasn’t until the next day when Helene went to the library and began consulting various lists of “Must See Sights” that she realized that she had seen remarkably few. Helene's personal list is unique. Accompanied by her enthusiastic friend Patsy, Helene revisits favorite old haunts and discovers many new delights. Their jaunts take in a wide variety of sights from such old stand-bys as Wall Street and the Statue of Liberty to the city’s newest and mostdramatic landmarks, Roosevelt Island and the dizzying heights of the World Trade Center. Venerable and peculiar New York institutions such as Zabar's and Bloomies are not neglected. Helene and Patsy sweep through Manhattan all the way from Battery Park to Harlem. APPLE OF MY EYE is an affectionate and amusing journal and scrapbook of a memorable tour through Helene Hanff’s New York. “This is a book to read for pleasure and profit, to keep for rereading and reference, says Emily Kimbrough, a fellow New Yorker. “The tart humor and genuineimpertinence about some of New York’s sacred cows are deftly larded with a scholar's knowledge of the city Helene Hanff loves. A native of Philadelphia, Helene Hanff has lived most of her life in New York. She has written many books, including the classic 84, Charing Cross Road and its sequel, The Duchess of Bloomsbury. 1978 Book Review From The New York TimesHELENE HANFF, who gave us “84, Charing Cross Road,” a book every bibliophile cherishes as he would a lost love, has now written a valentine to Manhattan Island, which she calls New York, New York. It's a valentine in the form of a guide, but it is not laid out like Euclid, It’s personal, informal, idiosyncratic, and it sometimes growls in anger. But it is full of those bits of information a visitor should have and often does not. For example, a newcomer to town may not know, even if he consults a map, that to go from 20 East 49th Street to 20 West 49th Street is a matter of a few steps. But to go from 20 East 59th Street to 20 West 69th Street is a good walk, maybe even a ride crosstown. Comments on Museums Starting south of the Battery at the Statue of Liberty, Miss Hanff and a friend worked their way way north, in a course that defies plotting, to the Cloisters at the other end of the island. It took a couple of months, and in all that time Miss Hanff kept a log. The log became the book. But the pictures are there, and very evocative they are, too. Her way with museums are her own. She mentions the Metropolitan and the Museum of Modern Art, but she gives more than equal time to the Morgan Library, the Frick and the Cooper-Hewitt. These institutions and others do not come through unscathed, She can’t forget and doesn’t let the reader forget how Andrew Carnegie (Cooper-Hewitt) and Henry Clay Frick (the Frick) madetheir money and that the blood of working men is mixed with the brick and mortar of their buildings. Her quarrel with the Metropolitan is of another sort; with its voracious encroachment on Central Park, “Why,” she asks, “can’t they build up instead of out?” To Central Park she pays more than homage, And rightly so. Every traveler to Paris, London, Rome visits those cities’ parks. But newspapers have erected such an aura of fear around Central Park that she thinks many visitors will never set a foot in it. Her long lyrical listing of what it has tooffer provides another view of that green place. Charming Houses, Too She does the same in another regard when she points out that Manhattan is not only skyscrapers, that there are streets and rows of houses as charming in their town-house effect as those inLondon or Paris: Strivers Row in Harlem, Washington Square, streets in the West 70's and 80’s. And she suggests that a local restaurant known to the people in the area for its quality will provide as decent a meal and more cheaply than many a starred eatery. Helene Hanff is a New Yorker's New Yorker. She loves the place even in the summer and probably can’t conceive of a life off the island. “Apple of My Eye” is not the last word in guide books. Others are fuller and more pointedly factual, but none is more juicy or flavorsome. Condition:Book is very good with light wear. Book is tightly bound. Previous owners signature on front pastedown (see last photo). Otherwise no other writing. Dustjacket complete but worn in fair condition with age wear, creases and staining to front and back and various closed tears. DJ is not price-clipped. Now covered in a protective dj sleeve. Details:hardcover 202 pages 8" x 8 1/2"1978 - Second printing according to number line Doubleday & Company Terms (payment, shipping, tax, returns, feedback, etc.) Please read before buying U.S. bidders only Payment Please pay within 48 hours of winning. eBay managed payments Shipping Shipping will be $6.50 and will be shipped USPS media mail with tracking. We may upgrade your package at our discretion to USPS Ground Advantage. Package will be shipped within 4 business days after payment - usually faster. The USPS can be notoriously slow, it could take 2-3 weeks for delivery. Please take that into account when leaving feedback, that we will ship quickly, but the USPS can take a long time to deliver, and we have no control over delivery time. Why Shipping Costs Are What They Are: eBay users may note that postal rates increased AGAIN on July 14, 2024. That's EIGHT price hikes in 4 years. This was the largest single price increase ever: 10% on media mail. USPS shipping is getting expensive, but eBay also charges sellers 15% on the shipping cost (+ the taxes), in addition to the actual package shipping cost. That fact and the USPS business model has made shipping prices rise quite a bit since 2019. In 2019 a one pound package sent via media mail cost $2.75. Today it is 68% more to send the same package. This is all part of the bi-annual price increases starting in 2020 & the misguided USPS 10 Year Plan - “Delivering For America,” implemented in 2021 which twice per year, every year until 2030 will keep increasing rates, while the USPS continues to lose billions of dollars. Combined Shipping if you Buy or Win Multiple Auctions Multiple book/media auction wins will qualify for combined shipping when possible. Do not pay until auctions you are bidding on are complete. Email to let us know that you will be bidding or have won more than one item. A revised combined invoice will then be sent after you tell us you are done bidding. Otherwise, if you pay before all auctions are complete or pay separately - combined shipping is not available. Sales Tax: If your state has sales tax, it is collected by eBay & then paid to your state tax authority. Sellers do not make money from this but are charged a percentage by eBay on the total sale including tax – insane, but true. Returns No returns. We describe all items conservatively. However, If there is a problem, message us through eBay messages to let us know what the issue is before contacting eBay or initiating a return or leaving feedback and we will work it out. We want satisfied customers. Feedback: After you receive your item and are satisfied, please leave positive feedback and after you do we will reciprocate. Questions There’s no such thing as a stupid question. Please ask any and all questions before bidding. Photos & Descriptions Photos are of the actual item depicted and are part of the description, please view them all. No stock photos, as many other “bulk sellers” listings are used, which doesn’t show the real item you will be receiving. Descriptions are carefully written and detailed so you know exactly what you are bidding on. We reserve copyright to all our own descriptions & photos.
